Zip On!

So far this has been an awesome week to be at Camp and it has only half begun. Campers could be seen the past few days busily going to and from classes and activities, eager to reach their next destination in order to begin the next fun activity that awaits them. And as busy as everyone has been it is nothing in comparison to the days ahead because in most classes the first day or so are spent in discussions or going over safety for the class, which means that today is when the most exciting part of many classes begin. In addition to everything that happens during the day, the rest of the week will also be packed at night. For instance tonight was family night which means everyone at Camp this week was enjoying seeing their friends and family and participating in the campfire activities, tomorrow night the focus will be on Tapping and all of the ceremony that goes along with it, and Friday night is usually spent packing gear, an amazing meal in Scout Craft valley and the closing campfire.

Today I spent my morning on the east side of Camp, which is the side that contains the climbing tower, lake, and all of the shooting ranges. When I got to the climbing tower the Scouts in the COPE program were all patiently awaiting their turn to go down the zip line, there were even a few staff members there that wanted to feel the rush while they were on their free period. Standing on the platform of the tower as you prepare to descend the zip line it seems like the catch team is far away but once you shuffle off the seat you are there in no time. After everyone had gotten their turn on the zip line there was another game that required two people to traverse a two separate wires suspended from the tower that came together to form a V, the open end being at the tower. When the pair had reached the point of the V using ropes to hold on to they had to turn around and hold on to each other in order to make it back. Many groups nearly made it back to the platform but no one was able to make it back completely. Farther down the road from the climbing tower is the shotgun range where today the shotgun Merit Badge class was shooting for the first time this week. To pass the class the Scout is required to hit twenty-four targets, already today many of them are almost to the goal.

As another post of the Camp Geiger Blog draws to a close I again would like to encourage you to check back to keep the most up to date with everything going on here. Something new and exciting happens every day at Camp so unless you are here, the blog is the way to keep it from passing you by.
