Its been another great day here at Camp Geiger, even later on into the afternoon as the temperature rose. Throughout the day certain areas have been more busy than others and some classes are just not filled at all. But as a I walked around Camp I noticed a few areas that remained busy no matter what time of day it was.

One such area was Handicraft, no matter what Handicraft class it is there are always scouts lining up to make something. Many younger Scouts especially like to begin getting Merit Badges that are fun such as pottery, leatherwork, basketry, and wood carving. Another appeal of these classes is that the Scout is able to leave with the satisfaction of creating something interesting or useful with their own two hands and they are almost completely hands on classes, there is very little instruction aside from instructions concerning safety. There is also something for the older Scouts to do in Handicraft and that is Metalworking. In this class they are taught how to use a form and how to bend and manipulate metals much like blacksmiths did hundreds of years ago. The metal that they usually use to bend is rebar and with this they make lid lifters for Dutch ovens and other useful hooks. Some of the more advanced metalworkers are also able to make chisels and other items out of rail road spikes. Another busy area next to Handicraft is the Nature Lodge. Some of the biggest classes of the day can be found in the Nature area, one such class being environmental science. Today they spent time on their daily nature observation which later in the week will become a one hundred word essay. Joining environmental science today on the nature trail was mammal study, another badge in the Nature area that requires participants to complete several observations.

Overall it has been another busy and fun filled day at Old Camp Geiger. If you would like to stay up to date with everything going on here I would like to encourage you to continue following the blog here at Camp Geiger Blogspot.
