Stormy Night Doesn't Stop The Fun

Although we had stormy weather last night all was well this morning when Reveille played and everyone was beginning their day. Aside from a short rain shower during the afternoon it was a perfect day here at Camp Geiger. The one slight problem that the rain created last night was the mud that effected some areas more than others, one particular muddy area that I spent time visiting today was the Shooting Sports area.

As usual the archery range was a busy place this morning. In addition to the usual archery classes that are being taught at the range the kids from the first class trail program are also there during the morning. Today the archery class was busy making bow strings and starting to put together their arrow kits. While the archery class was busy the first class trail kids got the opportunity to shoot the bows and they had to be extra careful not to miss the target today because they would have to walk way out into the mud to retrieve any lost arrows. The same set up was also going on at the rifle range where the first year Scouts were also getting an opportunity to shoot the .22 rifles. Farther down the trail from the archery and rifle ranges is the 3D archery range, which is where I saw the instructors anxiously awaiting they next group to show up. 3D archery is a special activity in the Shooting Sports area because it is not a class but instead a one day activity where the campers are able to walk through a course that has been set up in the trees and they shoot  three dimensional animal targets instead of the usual paper bull's eye. My last stop for Shooting Sports was the shotgun range where today the Scouts were practicing following a moving clay target with an unloaded shotgun so that they will be even better prepared for their first day of shooting tomorrow.

After lunch I visited the Nature Lodge to see what fun things they were up to. I also wanted to see the new turtle that they caught yesterday, it is still alive and well and the Nature Staff have now named it Blast. Some other activities going on at the Nature Lodge in the afternoon are space exploration and weather. The campers in the space exploration class started working on their rockets in order to get them ready for the big launch during family night and in the weather merit badge they were busily working on their weather charts for the class.

As tonight's blog draws to a close I encourage you to continue to check back here at Camp Geiger Blogspot to keep up to date with all of the exciting things that are going on here at Camp Geiger.
